Ingredients

Onion Ring Roll

  • 2 small white onions, sliced into 6 mm rounds
  • 200 g shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 0.5 tbsp olive oil
  • salt, garlic powder, and paprika, to taste

Ground Meat

  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 500 g ground beef
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp onion powder
  • 0.5 tsp paprika
  • 0.5 tsp chili powder
  • 60 ml low-sodium chicken broth

Assembly

  • 6 slices American cheese
  • 6 slices ham
  • 50 g pickles, sliced

Instructions

Onion Ring Roll

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Line a 30×43 cm rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Sprinkle the baking sheet with cheese so there is a thin, even layer. Arrange the onion ring slices side by side without fully overlapping.
  3. Lightly brush the tops of the onion rings with olive oil, then season generously with salt, garlic powder, and paprika.
  4. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.

Ground Meat

  1. While the onion rings bake, heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the ground beef and break it up with a wooden spoon. Stir in the salt, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and chili powder.
  3. Add the chicken broth, cover, and cook for 10 minutes. Uncover, stir, then remove the pan from the heat and keep covered.

Assembly

  1. When the onion sheet is done, let it cool for about 2 minutes. Do not wait too long or it will harden and become difficult to roll.
  2. Flip the onion sheet over. Layer the ham and cheese evenly on top, spread the ground beef over that, and finish with the pickles.
  3. Roll tightly from one short side to the other. Reposition the roll on the baking sheet with the seam side down and tucked underneath.
  4. Bake for 7 to 10 minutes. Slice and serve warm.
